You Need Better Sleep

Comments Off on You Need Better Sleep

Last night I didn’t get enough of it, thanks to my one-year old not wanting me to. Sleep is essential to health, it’s more important to our well-being than most of us would give it credit for. Sleep or lack thereof can deeply impact our emotional health, brain health, physical health, and our general performance throughout the day. According to WebMD the following are 9 surprising reasons to get more sleep:

Sleep

1. Better Health
2. Better Sex Life
3. Less Pain
4. Lower Risk of Injury
5. Better Mood
6. Better Weight Control
7. Clearer Thinking
8. Better Memory
9. Stronger Immunity

Who doesn’t want ALL of those things? All you need to do is get better sleep, easy, right? Not always. While I have found the regular exercise and not drinking alcohol before bed helps my sleep quality, one of the best things I have recently discovered is taking CBD before bed. Adding this to my routine of regular exercise has given me the best sleep (when the baby lets me). Some 25 – 35% of the population frequently has problems sleeping, I personally believe that number is extremely conservative.

What is CBD?

CBD is a phytocannabinoid found in industrial hemp and marijuana, what some people may not realize are two different varieties of the Cannabis sativa plant. The CBD I have been using is based on industrial hemp, not marijuana, because marijuana also contains significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a phytocannabinoid that is psychoactive and capable of making a person “high”. Industrial hemp contains negligible amounts of THC—no more than, say, poppy seeds contain opiates—and so it will not get you high.

While CBD is not psychoactive like THC, it still has a lot of influence on the human brain. There are many amazing uses for CBD, but for the sake of this article lets discuss CBD and sleep.
Early research suggests that CBD consumption has a positive effect on sleep. This effect may be related to CBD’s anxiolytic (anxiety-inhibiting) properties than direct sleep regulation. Some other studies have shown that CBD oil influences the dopamine levels in the bloodstream during sleep. This leads to a better, more relaxed sleep. Furthermore, it has been shown that CBD oil can help improve the night’s rest of people with an irregular sleeping pattern, and who experience chronic fatigue as a result.
